Steiff BASEL THE CONE NOSED BEAR (668319) - 64 cm Mohair Ltd Edition. Basel the Cone Nose Bear was released in 2006 as an exclusive to the Toy Shoppe. He is a massive 64cm tall, is 5 way jointed, has gorgeous boot button eyes and a rich resonant growler. He was limited to 1,500 pieces, this being number 414. If that wasn't enough, there is a wonderful reason and history for how he came about.. In the early 1900's, it seemed as if the entire town of Giengen, Germany was busy making Teddy Bears. The demand for Steiff bears had exploded and Steiff relied on outside craftsmen to help fulfil orders. It was a hectic time and some artisans deviated slightly, but noticeably, from the Steiff pattern.

From this unintended divergence was born one of Steiff's most striking and appealing faces, the cone nosed bear. Basel's unique cone nose adds an incredible depth of character to an already exceptional bear.

His luxurious curly mohair complements his "turn of the centre" good looks. Basel doesn't come with a box, instead he comes with a wonderful large embroidered cloth bag (see photo) and a certificate of authenticity. Basel has been living in a smoke free home with adult collectors, he has only been displayed and has not been handled much to help preserve him and is therefore in super condition. One thing I will mention for completeness is that there is a small scratch on his right eye, I have tried to photograph this but it is so hard to see and in real life you cannot notice it.

He comes complete with his original bag and certificates as shown in the photo. With his superb looks and wonderful history, Basel would be a real talking point in any collection!
